Tips for Winter Skin

Just a few things to think about over the next couple of months regarding your skin health during our wonderful winter…

The most common complaint I hear about, is dry chapped lips. To help keep your lips looking great, keep them covered up from the elements with beeswax or lip balm products. When heading outside use products that have sun protection as well.

Dry hands, we all have them in the winter. In part, people tend to wash their hands more often to prevent catching all the colds and flus running around. Use moisturizer when you wake up, while your out and before going to bed. Wearing gloves even for short trips can also help keep moisture in.

Along with the hands, our feet seem to outdo any dryness we see in our hands. Dry, cracked heels can cause discomfort and can make you more self conscious. I have a hunch more pedicures are done during the winter months to keep the exfoliating efforts at the top of our minds. To keep your feet well moisturized, at bedtime, try covering your feet in lotion or olive oil, wrap in plastic wrap, cover with socks and you will be amazed at how soft your feet can be.

Winter showering – as much as I like a hot shower anytime of year, during the winter this can draw moisture from the skin. Instead warm showers won’t strip away the natural oils. Moisturize immediately after a shower as well, your skin will soak it all in and thank you for it.

Some people find that they just have itchy skin during the winter months. To help alleviate this, try a luke warm bath with baking soda or oatmeal. Moisturize often and avoid rough fabrics, including wool.

With always having heat on to survive in our homes, the air becomes quite dry. Use a humidifier to help keep some moisture in the air.

Of course, above all, DRINK WATER. Extra water in the winter will keep your skin hydrated and healthy.
